Seven days in Hokkaido in early September is enough to eat properly, catch Japan’s first autumn colour, and sit in an onsen.
It is not enough to do Shiretoko, Hakodate, Furano lavender (already over), and every farm in Tokachi. Cut the fantasy map. This week stays in the west-central band: Sapporo for food, Daisetsuzan for the leaves that are actually turning, Sounkyo for the soak.
Sapporo itself will still look mostly green. The mountains will not. That’s the whole point of coming now instead of late October.
The Exact 7-Day Plan
Day 1 – Land in Sapporo
Fly into CTS. Train or airport bus into the city.
Check in near Odori or Susukino.
Easy walk, convenience-store victory, early dinner.
No day trip on arrival. You’re on an island that rewards sleep.
Day 2 – Sapporo food day
Morning: Nijo Market or a proper breakfast bowl.
Afternoon: park, beer museum, or just walk Odori.
If your dates hit 11 Sep onward, Sapporo Autumn Fest is in the park — 300+ stalls, go hungry.
Evening: soup curry or sushi. Stay in Sapporo.
Day 3 – Otaru day trip
Short train ride. Canal, glass, seafood lunch.
Back to Sapporo before dinner.
This is a half-to-full day, not an overnight. Keep the base.
Day 4 – Move inland to Sounkyo
Train to Asahikawa, then bus into Sounkyo Onsen.
Check into a ryokan or hotel with a bath.
Afternoon: Ginga and Ryusei waterfalls if the weather is kind.
Night: onsen. This is the reset after city food.
Day 5 – Daisetsuzan colour day
This is the reason the dates work.
Kurodake ropeway from Sounkyo, or transfer toward Asahidake if that’s showing better.
Early September colour lives up high — alpine reds and rowan, not city maples.
Dress warmer than Sapporo. Wind is real.
Back to Sounkyo for a second onsen night.
Day 6 – Asahikawa or slow return
Option A: Asahikawa ramen + zoo if you want an easy city beat.
Option B: one more short trail and a lazy checkout.
Work your way back toward Sapporo in the afternoon.
Stay in Sapporo this last night so the airport run is sane.
Day 7 – Buffer + fly
Morning coffee, last seafood, airport.
CTS can eat time. Don’t book a 7am international without a good reason.
Early September rules
Chase colour in the mountains, not in Sapporo
Layers every day you leave the city
One onsen stay is mandatory
Skip Shiretoko on a 7-day first trip
If Autumn Fest has started, treat it as dinner, not a checklist
That’s the week: eat, train, climb a ropeway, soak, leave. Hokkaido in early autumn doesn’t need more than that.
