Seven days in southern China in September should feel like river and lunch, not like a transit app.
This week stays in one landscape: Guilin and Yangshuo. You get the karst, the Li River, a bicycle day, and enough time to eat rice noodles more than once. You do not get Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhangjiajie and a night train. That’s how Golden Week people suffer early.
September here is warm, still a little humid, and much kinder than July. Do the trip before 1 October. If your dates include 25–27 September, treat those as slow town days, not Li River ticket days.
Day 1 – Land in Guilin. Fly into KWL. Hotel near the Two Rivers and Four Lakes area or close to the station. Evening walk and Guilin rice noodles. That’s the whole day. No Longji on arrival.
Day 2 – Guilin easy + move south. Morning at Elephant Trunk Hill or a short lakes circuit if you want one city photo. Afternoon bus or train to Yangshuo (about 1.5 hours). Check into a West Street-adjacent stay only if you like noise; otherwise pick the countryside or the river side. Dinner: beer fish. Stay in Yangshuo.
Day 3 – Li River or Yulong River. If you didn’t do the full Guilin–Yangshuo boat on day 2, do a shorter Li River stretch from Xingping, or skip the big cruise and take a bamboo raft on the Yulong. Morning is better. Afternoon rain or heat = café and cave if you need a roof. Stay in Yangshuo.
Day 4 – Bike the countryside. This is the day people remember. Rent bikes or an e-bike. Ride out toward the karst fields, stop for stuffed river snails or another noodle bowl, don’t make it a century ride. Back before you’re cooked. Stay in Yangshuo.
Day 5 – Xingping or nothing. Xingping for the 20 yuan note viewpoint if the weather is clear. Or stay put: cooking class, light walk, swimming hole if your hotel has one. Mid-Autumn dates belong on this kind of day — lanterns in town, not a packed boat.
Day 6 – Buffer in Yangshuo or back to Guilin. If you fly out of KWL tomorrow, sleep in Guilin tonight. If you have a late flight, one more Yangshuo morning is allowed. Last proper meal either way.
Day 7 – Fly. Airport time in Guilin is not theoretical. Build slack.
September rules. Book Li River tickets ahead if you insist on the long cruise. Carry cash and Alipay. Watch Mid-Autumn (25–27 Sep) and be gone before Golden Week (1–7 Oct). Yangshuo nights can be loud on West Street; countryside stays are the no-burnout move.
That’s the week: noodles, river, bikes, one viewpoint, home. Southern China doesn’t need more than that in September.
