So is it a good time to visit?
Yes — if you stay put in Seoul (or Busan) and want palaces, cafés and streets with actual room to walk. No — if your plan is a multi-city dash, a last-minute KTX ticket, or eating at the one famous restaurant that goes home for the holiday.
This is not Songkran. Nobody is throwing water at you. It is a family holiday with transport physics. Get those physics wrong and the week feels broken. Get them right and Seoul in late September is one of the calmest versions of the city you’ll see all year.
What actually happens. Offices shut. Seoul’s residential districts go quiet. Gyeongbokgung and the river paths feel less like a queue. Meanwhile, anywhere people go home to — Jeolla, Gyeongsang hometowns, some coastal spots — gets busy. Highway rest stops look like a festival. Korail treats this like a military operation. Locals buy tickets first. Foreigner KTX windows for the Chuseok travel period typically open later; for 2026 that sale is flagged around 11 September. If you need a train across the country over 23–27 September, do not improvise.
The good version of Chuseok. Base in one city. Walk. Museum. Palace at night if it’s running. Neighbourhood restaurants that stay open for people who didn’t leave. Cooler late-September air. No summer humidity fight. You came to be in Korea, not to cross it.
The bad version of Chuseok. Incheon arrival straight into a sold-out train to Busan. Favourite BBQ joint shuttered. Convenience stores doing the heavy lifting. A day trip that becomes a five-hour crawl. That’s not “authentic culture.” That’s bad scheduling.
Who should go. Solo travellers and couples happy in one city. People who already have hotel and train locked. Anyone who likes a quieter Seoul.
Who should wait. First-timers who want Seoul + Busan + Jeju in one week. Families who need everything open. Anyone booking after mid-September and hoping the KTX still has seats.
If you still want to come. Lock the hotel now. Stay in Seoul or stay in Busan — pick one. Buy the train before you need it, or don’t buy a train at all. Check restaurant hours. Treat 24–26 September as a city break, not a transit week. Then enjoy the fact that half the city went to see their parents.
Chuseok is a good time to visit Korea if you stop trying to visit all of Korea while Korea is busy visiting itself.
