Early September is when this island starts winning — not because the whole place is on fire with maple leaves (it isn’t), but because it gets autumn first, eats better than almost anywhere in Japan, and hasn’t hit the October foliage circus yet.
Sapporo sits around 15–23°C. Nights drop. The air actually works for walking. Up in Daisetsuzan, Japan’s earliest colour is already starting on the high ground: Kurodake and Asahidake can show red from early to mid-September. Come back in late October if you want ginkgo tunnels in the city. Come now if you want mountains that look like autumn while the rest of Japan is still in a short-sleeve argument.
Why early September works
First koyo in the country. Daisetsuzan is the headline. Ropeways at Asahidake and Kurodake beat almost every Honshu spot by weeks.
Weather you can hike in. Still mild in the cities. Crisp up high. Pack a layer.
Food season, not leftover summer. Salmon, ikura, sanma, hairy crab — this is when Hokkaido stops being “also good food” and starts being the point.

Fewer peak-leaf tour buses. Those arrive when Sapporo itself turns red in mid-to-late October.
What early September is not
It is not “all of Hokkaido is red.”
Furano lavender is finished. Hakodate foliage is weeks away. If someone sold you a full-island autumn postcard for 5 September, they lied.
Go high for colour. Stay low for food. That split is the whole trick.
