The Only 7-Day Japan Summer Festival Itinerary You Need (July Focus – Gion Matsuri & More)

Konnichiwa, my festival-loving, fireworks-chasing, yukata-wearing friends! It’s your Silly Travel Guru, currently imagining myself in a colorful yukata watching massive floats parade through Kyoto streets while eating festival snacks.

This 7-day Japan summer festival itinerary is built for real humans who want the best of July’s matsuri season without the usual exhaustion. You’ll experience Gion Matsuri, Sumida River Fireworks, and more — all at a comfortable, enjoyable pace.

Day 1-3: Kyoto – Gion Matsuri Magic

Base: Central Kyoto (near Gion or Arashiyama)

  • Day 1: Arrival & Gion Matsuri Introduction Fly into Osaka or Kyoto. Settle into your ryokan or hotel. Afternoon: Explore Gion district and see the early festival atmosphere. Evening: Stroll through streets filled with yatai (food stalls) and yukata-wearing locals.
