The Only 7-Day Japan Summer Festival Itinerary You Need (August Focus – Aomori Nebuta & More)

Konnichiwa, my festival-loving, fireworks-chasing, yukata-wearing friends! It’s your Silly Travel Guru, currently imagining myself shouting “Rassera!” while massive illuminated floats glow in the Aomori night.

August is when Japan’s summer festival season reaches its peak. This 7-day itinerary focuses on the best of August — with a strong emphasis on Aomori Nebuta Matsuri, plus other highlights. You’ll experience epic parades, dancing, and cultural energy without burnout.

Day 1-3: Aomori Nebuta Matsuri – The Star of August

Base: Aomori City

  • Day 1: Arrival & Festival Introduction Fly or take the shinkansen to Aomori. Settle in and explore the city. Afternoon: Visit the Nebuta Museum (Wa Rasse) to learn about the history and craftsmanship of the floats. Evening: Catch the early evening parade for a taste of the energy.
