Southern China works when you stop expecting Beijing and start understanding the Pearl River Delta on its own terms.

Guangzhou gives you history, arcades, and serious Cantonese food.
Shenzhen gives you scale, skyline, and tech-driven modern China.

The mistake most travelers make is bouncing between cities without grouping neighborhoods properly. This itinerary prevents that.

Before You Go: Practical Reality

Timing

Chinese New Year in 2026 falls on February 17, strongly affecting China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macau, and South Korea in terms of transport demand and closures. By late March, operations are typically normal—but always confirm rail tickets in advance.

Connectivity

  • Translation apps essential

  • Mobile payment systems common

  • Keep passport accessible for transport/security

Transit Rule

Stay in each city for multiple nights. Do not day-trip back and forth.

Where to Stay

Guangzhou

Stay near central metro lines and food density areas. You want:

  • Walkable evening food

  • Easy metro access

  • Not far from Pearl River

Shenzhen

Choose a central district near a main metro hub:

  • Easy skyline access

  • Quick transit to waterfront

  • Food clusters nearby

The Extra-Detailed 7-Day Plan

Day 1 — Arrival in Guangzhou + Light River Walk

Goal: land calmly.

Afternoon

  • Check in.

  • Short orientation walk near hotel.

  • Identify 2–3 food streets within walking distance.

Evening

  • One proper Cantonese dinner (not rushed).

  • Light riverfront stroll.

Rule: no museum marathons today.
