October is a good time to visit Seoul if you want cool weather, low rain, and the start of the autumn leaves. It is not the only good month. Late October into early November is better if the leaves are the whole point. October is the trade: you get the weather, and you miss the Chuseok crush.
Chuseok 2026 ran 24–26 September. That is the family holiday. Roads empty in the city and fill outside it. Shops close. October is the week after. Seoul is back at work. The palaces are open. The weather has already turned.
What the weather actually does
Seoul in October is cool and dry. Daytime highs sit around 20°C. Nights drop to about 10°C. The monthly average is about 15°C, and rain is light, around 50 mm across the whole month. That is jacket weather, not winter. A T-shirt under a light knit and a windproof shell covers almost every day. Add a warmer layer if you are out after dark in the second half of the month.
Early October is milder and greener. Late October is the better half if you came for colour. The swing between midday and evening is the part people miss. You will be warm on a palace walk at 2 pm and cold on the subway platform at 8.
The leaves, honestly
Do not expect peak colour on 1 October. In 2026 the Korea Tourism Organization and the National Arboretum put peak foliage in the Seoul area in late October, with Bukhansan closer to 4 November. City ginkgo and palace grounds usually look best from late October into the first week of November. Seoraksan, if you are leaving the city, peaks earlier, around 25 October.
So October works. Late October works better for the postcard. Early October works if you want the weather without waiting for the trees.
Who should come
Come if you like walking, food, and a city that does not make you sweat. Come if a light jacket sounds like a relief after a hot summer. Come if you can handle a popular month. Autumn is not empty. It is just not a national holiday.
Wait if your whole plan is a mountain in full red. Early November is the safer bet for Bukhansan and the southern parks. Wait if you need beach weather. October is not that.
How to use the month
Mornings are for the palace. Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung are easier before the tour groups stack up, and the light is better. Afternoons are for a neighbourhood walk: Ikseon-dong, Seongsu, or the Deoksugung stone wall road if the leaves have turned. Evenings are for food. Seoul in October is built for that. You are not fighting heat or a closed holiday kitchen.
One mountain day is enough. Bukhansan if you want it close. A Gangwon day trip only if the leaves are already moving and you have a full day, not a half. Do not try to see Seoul and Busan and Jeju in the same week and still claim you saw autumn.
Book the popular palace and any hanok stay if the dates matter. October is a normal busy month, not a shutdown. Weekdays are the quieter version.
The short version
October gives you cool, dry days, open restaurants, and the first real colour. It does not give you guaranteed peak foliage on day one, and it does not give you an empty city. If that trade sounds fair, book it. If you only want the red trees, slide a week later.
